Sociology

Aim/Mission Statement
The Sociology Department offers students an important opportunity to explore and discover the social world in a new light. Students are challenged to think critically and clearly about human behaviour in all its diversity.

Current issues are explored in depth with the emphasis on New Zealand social issues, such as race, health, education, justice and religion.

This clearly enables students to clarify their own values as well as critique the viewpoints of other in a balanced manner, thus assisting them to take their places as informed, well-rounded citizens.

About the Department
The Teacher in Charge of Sociology continually liaises with other teachers and lectures of Sociology and is a senior member of the Beacon Schools Senior Social Studies action group, which assists teachers throughout New Zealand with NCEA issues in this subject area.

A small computer suite in the Sociology room provides access, though the internet, to instant research material.

The department has suitable material on VHS and DVD to enhance topic understanding.

Guest speakers on selected topics enrich the learning process in areas such as law, family issues and religion.

Trips to appropriate venues such as the Auckland City Hindu Temple are arranged.
