The Technology Department offers a diverse range of subjects to students, with assessment divided into two main areas: courses with achievement standards and those with unit standards.
Examples of achievement standard courses are Graphics, Information Technology and Textiles Technology.
Examples of unit standard courses are Automotive, Boat Building, Carpentry, Catering and Hospitality, Information Management, and Computer Applications.
All of the courses offered can lead to tertiary study at university or polytechnic, and the department has been increasingly successful in placing students into a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities. Consequently, Glenfield College is becoming well-respected amongst local industries for providing good quality candidates for apprenticeship.
At the junior level, (years 9 and 10) technology is a core curriculum subject, and students in year 9 experience a rotation of Electronics, Food and BioTechnology, Structures and Mechanisms, Production and Processes, and Information Technology. In year 10 the students can choose to extend their interests into specialised technological fields.
Our technology block was completely rebuilt in July 2008, allowing us to include brand new facilities and notable improvements. The block has high visibility throughout with internal glass walls, increasing safety by offering greater visibility of our students. There are three machine or processing areas for Wood, Metal, Fabrics and Plastics along with attendant theory and design rooms for Wood, Metal and Fabric. These are in addition to specialist rooms for Automotive (including a fully operational service bay), Boat Building, Fabric, Graphics, Computing, Robotics, Food Technology ( including a fully serviced Restaurant ) and the staff work area.
