Shaun Johnson Visits Glenfield College, His Dad’s Old School
Shaun Johnson visits Glenfield College thanks to Sky TV.
Fresh off the plane from London, rugby league player and SKY ambassador, Shaun Johnson made his way to Glenfield College on Thursday, 24th November for a special Q&A session with the year nine and ten students.
SKY TV regularly take Shaun to schools around the country and arranged today’s special visit after a shout-out from Shaun on his Facebook page to nominate a school. Year 10 student Toni Fox nominated Glenfield College and asked for Shaun to encourage the school’s many up-and-coming sports stars to pursue their dreams.
Topics Shaun touched on included his favourite stadium, “I love Mount Smart, it feels like home”, what his backup sport would be (Basketball) and advice on dealing with fame, “I know this isn’t going to last forever. You’ve just got to enjoy it and embrace it. It’s a bit of a buzz, to have someone come up and say hello to you, and you say hi back and they just smile, or ya know, giggle. You sort of feel like you’ve made a difference, or like you’ve made someone’s day. It’s very cool.”
To reinforce the school’s pro-social behaviours and anti-bullying message, Shaun talked about social media and the negative messages he sometimes receives, “Like a lot of people here, I don’t like people saying bad stuff, but I can’t just sit there and take all the positives. If I want to be on social media, I have to be open to it.” On making a team work, he said, “Respect is important, also players making sure no one is better than the other. Everyone should feel equal.”
It was a special day for the Glenfield students – and for Shaun too who was accompanied by his dad Paul, a Glenfield College old boy.
